Feminists
in Science: The Case For Expanding Science and Gender and Race
Discrimination Law

PAPERS & PRESENTERS: * Outsider Feminists in Science by Banu Subramaniam (University of Massachusetts Amherst) * Non-U.S. Women in Science: Legal Implications by Patricia Millhoff (University of Akron) * Expanding Discrimination Law: Blacklisting by Crystal Renee Gafford Muhammad (East Carolina University). This session explores feminist scientists as outsiders, the broader implications for U.S. and immigrant women academics, and suggests academic and legal remedies ("Reflections of Natures and Cultures," Subramaniam, Feminist Science Studies, eds. Mayberry, Subramaniam, Weasel 2001; "An Oasis In A Desert Palace," Muhammad, NWSA Journal, 19.3, 2007). When U.S. and immigrant feminist scientists challenge male-defined epistemological and phenomenological bases of their fields and insist on equity, their rights as women are denied and scholarship they endorse in black/Africana Studies, Latin-American Studies, ethnic studies, cultural studies, post-colonial studies, and women's studies is resisted ("Expanding Science," Harding, Feminist Science Studies; Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering , Vol. 15, Issues 1-3, 2009). A feminist scientist and feminist professors of law show the feminist scientists' situation embodying academic and legal challenges facing all feminist academics. Who Remain on Campus After Harassment and Discrimination

Mayfield (University of Central Oklahoma) * Resisting the Old Boy's Network and Administrative Manipulation by Ines S. Shaw (Nassau Community College/SUNY) * I'm Still Here: From the Bathroom to the Boardroom by Anissa D. Moore (Nassau Community College/SUNY) This panel examines double marginalization as applied to feminist academics challenging traditional educational epistemology and phenomenology and remaining on campuses after lodging grievances or lawsuits. Feminists and Women Studies' directors are outsiders because their scholarly, pedagogical, and administrative perspectives and practices place them in conflict with institutionalized power (Anti-feminism in the Academy, eds. Clark, Nelson-Garner, Higonnet, and Katrak, 1996). As targets of gender and race discrimination, they become double outsiders ("Living Feminism in the Academy," Corneilse , 2009; doubleness concept, Beale's "Double Jeopardy," Bambara's The Black Woman 2005). Panelists show double marginalization providing insights into the organization of power and the potential for institutional change and double outsiders using their theoretical, political and practical resources to meet the challenges of remaining during/after a complaint or lawsuit (AAUW Tenure Denied, 2004; NWSA Program Adminstrators' Handbook, ed.
